Dr. Britt Baker: Genuine Role Model

Happy Sunday Darling Divas! In the midst of watching Power 2: Ghost, I scrolled through Apple News and came across an article on AEW’s Dr. Britt Baker, describing who she is and what she does, along with her background as a child from Punxsutawney, PA (I wonder if she chased Phil the groundhog as a kid?). A former cross country, track and basketball star, Baker had the desire to wrestle from a young age, and while enrolled in the Pittsburgh School of Dentistry, she began training as a professional wrestler. The article also discussed her busy schedule from working 10-12 hour days, to hopping a flight to appear on Dynamite and briefly touched on her relationship with fellow wrestler-wait for it-Adam Cole (bay bay!). Baker is described as a strong multitasker with a passion for her patients and fans, going right to the airport from the clinic and vice versa.

When I first saw her as a face, I wondered what the dentist gimmick was about. My first thought was Isaac Yankem, DDM, who appeared in the nineties as Jerry Lawler’s personal dentist. Was this real? What did the DMD have to do with wrestling. Curiosity got the better of me, and when I realized she is an actual dentist, I was surprised. The clinic where she works provides her with the needed flexible schedule to appear on television weekly and for pay-per-views.

As women, we are the nurturers of the home, and find ourselves stretched thin (no pun intended) with responsibilities of careers, friendships, family, and goals. Add marriage and kids plus parenting to the daily receive of life and we become a human version of Gumby. During college, I was sacrificing a lot for homework (football was on of them), including family and friends. Top knots were my life (and still are) plus finding time to get everything done, along with days where I would lose myself trying to find my strength to continue my school-work day balance.

To achieve the goal of becoming a dentist is one thing, and a professional wrestler another. Both take time,  hard work and dedication. To achieve both is something and to juggle the demanding career of dentistry plus the physical career of wrestling is another. One botched move and your career is over, with possible physical impairments that may affect you for the rest of your life. Look at Darren Drozdov, a former football player turned wrestler who lost his career in 1999, due to a botched running powerbomb which left him quadriplegic. If something like this happened to Baker, she’d be unable to continue working as a dentist and wrestler, something her parents are concerned about and rightfully so.

Since her heel turn (heels in pro wrestling are the bad guys) she is larger than life. Her portrayal as a heel is great and she is one of my favorites in AEW’s Women’s Division.

Now that I understand what the Role Model thing is, I agree with the use of the term with her character. Dr. Britt Baker DMD is a role model, while Dr. Brittany Baker, DMD is a genuine role model due to her achievements, passion for her work both in the chair and the ring, along with her strong mental health and ability to handle it all. Brittany, you are an inspiration to women everywhere.

She wants to punch you in the face then fix your teeth after she does it. Talk about a caring dentist!

With bad memories of braces in high school and love,

Dani
